The engine management light (the little orange engine symbol) means the car's ECU has logged a fault and wants the codes read. If it's steady, you can usually drive carefully to somewhere it can be checked. If it's flashing, stop driving — that means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter quickly.
Common causes range from a loose fuel cap to misfires, faulty oxygen sensors, EGR issues or coil packs. The only way to know is to read the codes — guessing is expensive.
